Rust Beginner Tips: How to Survive Your First Hour
Rust is hard at the start. You spawn with a rock, a torch and nothing else. These tips will help.
1. Hit the basics first
Use your rock to gather. Hit trees for wood, and hit rocks and ore for stone, metal and sulfur. You need all of these.
2. Craft a few tools
Open your crafting menu and make a hatchet and a pickaxe. They gather much faster than the rock.
3. Don't carry everything
If you die, you drop what you carry. Keep only what you need and store the rest.
4. Build a small base
Place a building plan, then a hammer, to make walls and a roof. Add a door and a sleeping bag. A sleeping bag is your respawn point, so make one early.
5. Use a Tool Cupboard
A Tool Cupboard protects your base from decay and stops other players from building near it. Fill it with resources to keep your base standing.
6. Eat and drink
Watch your food, water and health. Pick corn, pumpkins and berries. Drink from water and stay warm at night.
7. Learn the monuments later
Monuments have good loot, but they are dangerous. Get your base set up first, then go.
8. Ask for help
Most servers have a chat. Ask questions. On a PVE server like Sanguine Rust, players don't fight each other, so it's a calmer place to learn.
What to skip
- Don't fight everything. Running away is fine.
- Don't build in the open. Pick a spot near trees and rocks.
