Rust Underground Train Network: What Facepunch's Commits Hint At
Heads up: this post is a guess. Facepunch has not announced anything about this. We are reading public commit messages, and commit messages are short and can change.
What we saw
Facepunch posts every code change (a "commit") on its public commits page. In the most recent ones, there were notes about work on the underground train network, including progress on a break room.
Rust already has trains and an underground rail line. So these commits look like more work on the tunnels and rooms down there, not a brand new system.
What it could mean
Here are guesses, from least to most risky:
- More polish on the existing underground area, like new rooms or props
- New places to explore along the tracks
- A new monument-style area tied to the rail line
We don't know which one it is, or if it ships in the next update at all. Facepunch often works on things for many months before they show up.
Why it matters if you play PVE
Underground areas are good for solo players. There is less open sky, fewer long sight lines, and loot you can grab without a big fight. A new room down there would give people a new reason to ride the rails.
How to check yourself
Facepunch's commits page is public. Search it for "train" or "underground" and read the newest ones. When the real patch notes come out, they win over any guess here.
